GetComparisons: A Tale Of The Tape For Anything

Nexus S or iPhone? Kindle Fire or iPad? Samsung TV or LG TV?
When people try to make such decisions, they usually look for as
much data as possible so they can compare choices. For many
gadgets, that’s relatively easy because you can compare similar
specs such as CPU speed, RAM, screen size, etc. But what about
for everything else? That’s what the startup GetComparisons is going
after.
They aim to be the “Epinions for comparisons,” founder Akshay
Arabolu says. The service is all about gathering
user-written product reviews and formatting them in such a way
that it’s easy to compare things. While a service like gdgt does a great job of this for
gadgets, Arabolu found a pain point in trying to figure out if
he should use WordPress
or Tumblr for blogging. So that’s the service he set out
to build.
“We want to own the mindshare for comparisons on the
web,” Arabolu says. “But we don’t want it to be Britney Spears
versus Lady Gaga — we want to focus on products and services
that people spend time and money on,” he continues, noting that
they started with web products but are now broadening their
scope. It’s all about what comparisons the users are interested
in seeing, he notes. Anyone can request a review on the site.
And again, it’s the users who then populate the reviews. “We
provide a template for the reviews,” Arabolu explains. “It’s
somewhere in the middle of Quora and Yahoo Answers,” he
continues, noting that they wanted to make it as simple as
possible, but also make it robust enough to provide good
information. Reviews feature individual attributes that go from
one to five stars (I don’t love
the one to five star system, as I explain here). But
there’s also plenty of room for users to explain their ratings.
GetComparisons just got done with a new redesign this week. One
thing you won’t find anywhere on the site: ads. “We spent too
much time on our UI,” Arabolu says.

Amazon Looking to Buy Palm [REPORT]
Amazon
wants to buy Palm and its smartphone/tablet platform WebOS,
VentureBeat reports citing a well-placed source.
There are other interested parties, but Amazon is nearest to
completing the deal, the same source claims.
After HP gave
up on the tablet business, rumors started swirling about
possible buyers for Palm and WebOS – a platform which showed a
lot of promise even in its early days, but was never given a
chance to shine as Palm changed hands.
Recent reports that Samsung was interested in acquiring Palm
were quickly shot down
by the company CEO Choi Gee Sung. HTC, on the other hand,
carefully let
the world know that it wouldn’t mind having a spare mobile
OS on its hands, although CEO Cher Wang was careful not to go
into specifics.
Now Amazon rises as the next likely contender. The company
recently shook the world of tablets by introducing a cheap
7-inch device, Kindle
Fire, which has something in common with the tablets from
HTC and Samsung – it’s Android-based.
After Google’s purchase
of Motorola Mobility, focusing one’s entire
tablet/smartphone strategy on Android quickly became a lot less
attractive, so it seems as if it’s just a matter of time until
someone takes Palm off HP’s hands – probably at a big discount.
If Amazon really does acquire Palm and WebOS, it would probably
have to completely switch future Kindle Fire products from
Android to WebOS, as it doesn’t make much sense for a company
whose hardware devices are just a front to offer users content
to develop tablets on two operating systems at the same time.
But Amazon has shown a lot of commitment and patience with its
e-reader and tablet products, and we’re quite sure it could
integrate WebOS into its long-term tablet strategy.

Quora Launches an iPhone App
Quora, the
social Q&A service that made waves
earlier this year, is finally releasing its official iPhone
app.
Quora for iPhone retains most of the functionality of its
desktop web version. Users can browse their activity feed, view
questions, follow questions, vote on answers, add answers and
add questions. It also includes a notifications feed, search
functionality and the ability to manage your profile and view
others. Quora
has also added a shuffle feature that pulls up a random question
from anywhere on the site.
Quora co-founder Charlie Cheever told Mashable that
the app was designed with the consumption experience in mind.
People don’t want to write long answers on their iPhones, he
said, but Quora has given users the ability to add them if, say,
they’re on a long train ride.
The big new feature Quora is introducing in its iPhone app is
a “nearby” tab that lets users find questions related to their
location. For example, I’m able to use the app to see questions
people have asked about Russian Hill, my neighborhood in San
Francisco. This nearby content will grow exponentially as more
people use the iPhone app to create questions about local
institutions and neighborhoods.

The app is missing a key feature though: the ability to take a
photo and turn it into a question. The iPhone is ideal for
asking a question through a photo. Asking the community to
identify a plant or animal via an iPhone photo makes a lot of
sense. For its part, Quora says this feature is coming.
Co-founded by Cheever and former Facebook CTO Adam D’Angelo,
Quora was a darling of the technology world in 2010 and early
2011, but eventually lost the spotlight. Since then, the company
has been focused on improving its technology and diversifying
its content. The company points to food, filmmaking and even law enforcement as recent areas of
expansion, though Quora declined to reveal any stats about the
site’s growth (one thing it did reveal, though: New York, not
San Francisco, is its largest and most active city).
For now that’s fine, but eventually Quora will have to find a
way to market its content to the public. The content has
retained its high quality though — its greatest advantage
against mainstays such as Yahoo Answer and Answers.com

David Hasselhoff Dresses Like a Cheerleader and Destroys a Pink Limo [VIDEO]
You thought we were kidding? It’s OK, we thought it was a joke
too. In this promo video for the downloadable video game Burnout
Crash! David Hasselhoff dresses up in a cheerleader
outfit and blows up a pink limousine. That’s about it.
Strangely enough, the (absolutely insane) video makes some
sense. The game, which sees players trying to
cause as much mayhem as possible by crashing and exploding cars,
is controlled by a series of special Kinect-enabled
moves.
One of those moves is, apparently, “the cheerleader.” Players
can control the game with a standard controller (the game is
also available for PlayStation) or the Kinect — Xbox’s
motion-controlled peripheral. Explosions are triggered by
performing one of several signature finishers, including the
aforementioned “cheerleader,” or “the chicken.”
You wanted a ridiculous video for that one too? No problem.

Google Analytics Adds Real-Time Traffic Data
Google for the
first time is providing a window into real-time web traffic with
Google Analytics Real-Time.
Real-Time reports are available in the new version of Google
Analytics, and administrators with Analytics accounts will get
Real-Time reports. Google turned the new feature on Thursday for
“a number of you,” John Jersin, product manager at Google
Analytics wrote on the Google Analytics blog.
For users trying to gauge how a campaign or post is performing,
Real-Time will track the immediate impact to site traffic. If a
user posts something and then tweets about it, for instance,
Real-Time will track when traffic from the tweet stops driving
visits.
Google isn’t the first company to offer such data. Woopra,
Chartbeat and a number of other tools also provide data in real
time. But unlike some of those, Google’s will be free.
Speaking of which, Google also rolled out Google Analytics Premium, the first paid
Google Analytics product. Perks for the service include extra
processing power, advanced analysis and 24/7 support. Google did
not disclose pricing for that product.

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has long been
used in laboratory research because it is easy to manipulate,
and these tiny insects serve as a model system for many genetic
and developmental studies. Years ago, researchers discovered
that the fruitless gene (fru) controls much of the
courtship behavior in Drosophila. Now, scientists have
found that the same neurons that express fru also
express a chemosensory receptor called Ir84a.

service has tacked on another 14 Goog-powered gadgets to its list
of officially supported handsets and tablets. Yes, that's right,

the Atrix, Bionic and Nexus One, Skype is inviting the Xoom, the
Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Acer's Iconia to the party. We've even
received reports that video calls are working on other Honeycomb
