Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 announced, joins the Android tablet line-up with a 7-inch screen

If an 8-inch stylus-enabled Galaxy
Tablet wasn't your cup of tea, perhaps Samsung's new
seven-inch model will do the trick. The Galaxy Tab 3 has gone
official and the third iteration of the company's first
Android tablet arrives with a 1.2GHz processor, 8GB or 16GB
of storage (with expansion up to 64GB), a 3- and 1.3-megapixel
camera array and a substantial 4,000mAh battery. That 7-inch WSVGA
(1,024 x 600) TFT display suggests it's likely to be
a keenly-priced slate, although we're still waiting to hear on
specifics. Samsung's loaded up the Galaxy Tab 3 with
Android 4.1 and says that the WiFi version will launch "globally"
in May, while an incoming 3G model (no LTE at this point, but
it'll be able to make
calls) will follow in June.

Kingston's MobileLite Wireless is a memory card reader that doubles as a charger

By all metrics, Kingston's wireless Wi-Drive
has been a successful product: the company is still selling it two
years later, and has since refreshed it with beefier
storage and Android
compatibility. If there's one thing customers complained
about, though, it was the lack of expandable memory -- a problem
if you used all the space on the drive, or if you already had
stuff stored on an SD card. With that in mind, the company's
coming out with the MobileLite Wireless, which ditches internal
storage in favor of an SD slot and USB 2.0 port. (It will also
ship with a microSD adapter.) At the same time, it packs a modest
five-hour battery you can use to recharge USB-powered gadgets;
Kingston says there's enough juice in there to fully charge a
phone, but probably not a tablet.
Technically speaking, you can access everything stored on the
device by typing the MobileLite's IP address into a browser. But
for all intents and purposes, this is currently an iOS exclusive,
as that's the only platform for which you can download an app. As
with the Wi-Drive, though, Kingston plans to add an Android app,
as well as one for WP8. In the beginning, at least, it will be
available through just a couple sellers (Amazon and Staples), with
street prices expected to fall somewhere between $50 and $70. Any
questions? We hope not: this thing's aimed squarely at mainstream
users, so if Engadget readers don't get it, we're going to be
seriously concerned about all the regular folk.

Google Now for iOS hands-on

Google
Now is, perhaps, one of the more compelling reasons to opt
for an Android device over iOS. But, Mountain View is smart enough
to realize that its big push to deliver information pre-emptively
would be severely hampered if it was isolated
to one platform. So, here we are, almost a year after Now debuted
with the launch of Jelly
Bean, and the (mis)labeled Siri competitor has finally
landed on Apple's mobile OS. Obviously, to truly come to grips
with a product like this, you'd need days or weeks to truly judge
it, but we're familiar enough with the Android version to feel
comfortable passing along our initial impressions. So head on
after the break to see whether or not Google was able to replicate
its virtual assistant magic on iOS.

PSA: T-Mobile's Samsung Galaxy S 4 available online today

Samsung's latest flagship, the
GS4, landed on Sprint
and AT&T a couple of days ago, and now it's T-Mobile's
turn to join the party -- at least by way of its virtual
stores. Taking advantage of the carrier's recently
unveiled pricing scheme, the Galaxy S 4 will be available
starting at $149.99 up front for the 16GB model (plus the $20
extra per month for the next two years, of course). Now, if you're
looking to physically pick one up instead, you'll have to wait a
little longer, as it won't be available at brick-and-mortar shops
until May 1st.

Visualized: Space hurricane! NASA's Cassini records super cyclone on Saturn (video)

If the crashing sound of lightning
striking Saturn wasn't enough to excite your
inner-meteorologist, then perhaps footage of a raging
extraterrestrial hurricane will win you over. After orbiting the
ringed planet for nine years, NASA's Cassini
probe has managed to snag video of a super storm on the celestial
body's north pole. Cloaked by the darkness of winter, the
hurricane's eye became visible as Saturn's northern hemisphere
transitioned into spring. Unlike the tropical cyclones of Earth
(see: Hurricane Katrina, Sandy and Irene), this furious typhoon
has been spinning for several years and has winds that flow at
speeds exceeding 300MPH. Further differentiating itself from our
world's whirlwinds, this alien cyclone is locked to its planet's
north pole and is fueled by small amounts of water vapor instead
of an actual ocean. Completely in a category of its own,
the hurricane's eye measures about 1,250 miles wide and is
surrounded by fluffy white clouds the size of Texas. To see this

Wikimedia Android and iOS app exits beta, aims for easy Wikipedia photo gathering

Wikimedia Commons, which acts as Wikipedia's
media repository, has pushed its Android and iOS app out of the
beta phase, giving photo collecting for the digital encyclopedia
a workflow that isn't chained to a browser. By registering an
account online and wielding the software, users can upload
photographs taken with the application -- or within their device's
library -- straight to the organization's database, and endow them
with titles and descriptions. With the Android flavor, multiple
photos can be uploaded at once, images can be assigned categories
and those torn between snapping pictures for the open
source book of knowledge and their social circles can share
their contributions through the likes of Facebook, Twitter and

Skype for Outlook.com preview launches in the UK, coming to the US soon

Outlook.com's
60 million-plus users will have another feature to take advantage
of soon, as Skype is previewing built-in web access to its
service. Currently available in the UK (headed to the US and
Germany in "coming weeks," -- worldwide this summer) it lets users
make calls directly from their inbox via a browser plugin
available for Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. Users with
existing Skype accounts will also need to link their account to to
the website which will allow their contacts to be merged, with the
idea of having more choices of how to reach out to close contacts.
Gmail's added easy
access to hangouts and even Facebook has integrated
Skype-connected video into its messaging so we suppose it's
necessary for feature parity, with the added bonus of Skype's

Samsung starts production of 20nm 4Gb LPDDR3 mobile DRAM

What is it that you want to know about the RAM
in your mobile device? Usually, how much of it there is, and if
you're a little more demanding of your hardware, maybe what type
it is, too. Well, folk in the latter category might interested to
know that Samsung has started production of 20nm
4Gb LPDDR3 mobile DRAM. As is the nature of smaller, more
efficient components, the new chips promise to be faster (2,133
Mbps per pin, over LPDDR2's
800 Mbps), and -- so claims Samsung -- a 20 percent drop in
power consumption. With just four of these new chips, OEMs can
have a 2GB offering that's still just a slick 0.8mm in height.
